At the center of the enchanting rolling hills, lived a young shepherd. His existence was untarnished, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his herd of rams.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes among the lone tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day in day, watching over his responsibilities imbued in him a sense of tranquil contentment.
However, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. In one such instance because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty plan.
Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One morning he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but saw no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a few days more. However, one morning, a real wolf did attack the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty website and the results of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
